Paper 4 Literary Analysis

Paper 4 Literary Analysis

Q 3-5 pages in length 2. Use MLA standards for format and citations: ? 1” margins all around ? Double spaced (no extra spacing before/after title or between paragraphs) ? Typical 4-line header on the first page ? Center title after 4-line heading (NO separate title page) ? In-text parenthetical citations (for quotes from stories) ? Work(s) Cited page 3. Incorporate the use of literary conventions: ? Use the present tense when discussing the text ? Identify fully the author(s) (see example below) ? Identify the title of the work in the opening paragraph (see example below) NOTE: When you are writing about a literary work, it is very, very important to name the title of the work correctly and spell the author’s name correctly. If you err in either of these, you severely damage your credibility as a writer (ethos). In fact, if you misuse the title of a work or misspell an author’s or a character’s name in a paper for this class, for each title or name misused or misspelled, I will subtract 5 points from the paper’s evaluation. 4. Organization: a. Introductory paragraph – naming work and author and including your thesis statement. The thesis statement will include three elements of fiction that we’ve studied as your developmental points. Choose three from the following list:t Plot Tone and Style Structure Setting Symbolism Resolution Theme Character Development Allegory Allusion Imagery Example: “Technology and the pursuit of knowledge tends to be looked upon as a benefit to society. Man is only limited by his imagination. However, in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the author uses setting, character development, and symbolism as a cautionary tale to warn of the potential dangers of technology." b. You will then have 3 body paragraphs relating back to your thesis statement. In the Frankenstein example above, it would look something like this: [paragraph 1] “The early setting in this story proves to be a foreshadowing of the dangers of technology. Explorers are on an expedition in the arctic, which is uncharted territory that threatens life and limb and ultimately leads to isolation.” [Then use some quotes from the story to show the starkness and isolation as described in the story]. [paragraph 2] “The dangers of technology can be seen as the reader experiences both the main characters in the story experience new creation and new life, only to spiral downward as things go awry.” [use evidence from the text that the characters ultimately are destroyed by their discoveries] [paragraph 3] “The monster created by Dr. Frankenstein is symbolic of the monstrosity that can come out of technology gone wrong.” [use evidence from the text] c. Finally, you will add a concluding paragraph to "tie it all together!" Restate your thesis statement as well in the conclusion: “While technology offers the world new opportunities and unlimited possibilities, Shelley’s use of setting, character development, and symbolism in her classic novel, Frankenstein, remind the reader to approach our ever evolving world with a healthy fear and trembling.” d. You will end with a separate page for Work(s) Cited.

Culture becomes most people's identity, and they want to secure their cultural identity. However, with time, many seek change, giving rise to conflicts. In “Everyday Use,” Alice Walker shows the schism in cultural and traditional perspectives of a family where one member comes off age, and the others stick to their heritage through the plot, character development, and symbolism.
